You can use earthworms, minnows and grasshoppers as bait to great success, or any insects or flies if you can get them. Small spinners, or spinner and fly combination are also well known for being effective. Another type to try is a small tube jigs or twisted tail bait. Of all of these, the live minnow gives the greatest success because northern perch prefer natural food that they happen to be feeding upon at the time.
