The map · Four regions
Ontario splits its fishing into named tourism regions and 20 management zones. Here's what each of the four great northern regions is actually known for.
How Ontario is organized
Ontario designates fishing areas two ways: by 20 Fisheries Management Zones that set the rules, and by named tourism regions like Sunset Country and Algoma that anglers actually use to plan.
Season dates, catch limits, and size rules follow the zone your lake sits in — always check that before you go. But when you're choosing where to fish, the named regions below are the shorthand that matters.
Just north of the Minnesota border, this region is home to more fishing and hunting lodges than perhaps anywhere on earth. It's famous for walleye and world-class muskie, plus giant pike, smallmouth, crappie, and lake trout. The crown jewel is Lake of the Woods — 14,500 islands, 65,000 miles of shoreline, and every major species that swims in Ontario.
Wrapped around the east end of Lake Superior, Algoma prides itself on "real wilderness." With 28,000 square miles and thousands of lakes, it's the most diverse fishing in Canada — walleye, pike, and lake trout alongside muskie, crappie, brook trout, and even largemouth bass. Esnagi Lake is a standout for walleye and pike.
Home to mighty Lake Superior and Lake Nipigon, this region offers perhaps the finest brook trout fishing on the planet. The Nipigon River produced the world-record brook trout — a 14.5-pound fish caught in 1915 that still stands. Walleye, pike, lake trout, and steelhead round out an incredible mix.
The closest wilderness to the GTA — Temagami sits four hours from Toronto or Ottawa. Lake Nipissing is a walleye factory turned bass hotspot, and the French River and Georgian Bay hold record-class muskie and continental-best smallmouth. Easy access, huge variety.
